FETAL INTERVENTIONS

Fetal intervention is reaching inside the uterus to help a fetus who has a problem. Our ability to detect fetal problems has advanced so rapidly over the last few decades. While many diseases can now be accurately diagnosed before birth by genetic and imaging techniques, only a few require intervention before birth.

ANTENATAL SCANS

Ultrasound scans use sound waves to build a picture of the baby in the womb. The scans are painless, have no known side effects on mothers or babies, and can be carried out at any stage of pregnancy. Talk to your midwife, GP or obstetrician about any concerns you have.

FETAL INTERVENTIONS

Complications of pregnancy, whether they occur during gestation or postpartum, often pose complex challenges because they affect two patients (mother and fetus or infant) and because both short- and long-term outcomes must be considered in management decision making.

Fetoscopic Laser Ablation

Fetoscopy is a procedure where a small instrument (laparoscope) is inserted into the uterus in order to see the fetus and placenta.

Radiofrequency Ablation / Bipolar Cord Coagulation

The application of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) termination procedures to complicated cases involving monochorionic twins.

Fetal Shunts

Prenatal screening are blood tests with an ultrasound, which are done starting at 11 weeks of pregnancy, trisomy 18 or structural abnormality.

Fetal Blood Transfusion

A blood transfusion is given to replace fetal red blood cells that are being destroyed by the Rh-sensitized mother’s immune system.

First Trimester Screening

The first trimester screening is a safe, optional test for all pregnant women. It's a way of checking your baby's risk of certain birth defects.

Anomaly Scan

NOMALY SCAN is a detailed scan done at 18-23 weeks during which each part of the fetal anatomy is examined to see if the baby is developing normally.

Fetal Echo

Fetal echocardiography is a test that is done while the baby is still in the womb. It is most often done during the second trimester of pregnancy.

Fetal Neurosonogram

The Fetal Neurosonography module includes normal and abnormal fetal brain or spinal scans at various gestational ages, with scenarios such as neural tube defects, CMV infection, Heterotopia and Zika virus infection.

Growth Surveillance

Antenatal surveillance of fetal growth is an essential part of good maternity care, as lack of detection of fetal growth restriction is directly associated with stillbirth.

Viability Scan

This is an ultrasound examination that is usually carried out vaginally at 6-10 weeks of pregnancy. The aims of this scan are to determine the number of embryos present.

Fetal MRI

MRI has been increasingly used for detailed visualization of the fetus in utero as well as pregnancy structures. Yet, the familiarity of radiologists and clinicians with fetal MRI is still limited.

THE TEAM

The Fetal medicine unit in KMCH is the brain child of Dr.Mathew Cherian with a vision to establish a self sustaining, state of the art fetal care center by inculcating ethical practice and cutting edge technology.

It was started in the year of 2018 with Dr.N .Sumathi as the lead consultant. She is a radiologist with more than 10 years of experience in the field of imaging.Her special interest is Fetal MRI.

The other 2 consultants Dr.Saira Rajan and Dr.S.Amuthavalli have finished Masters in obstetrics and gynaecology and have undergone 2 years of intensive fetal medicine training under the mentorship of Dr.S.Boopathy Vijayaraghavan who is one of the pioneers in this field.

The unit is associated with Dr.K.Manikandan who is a specialist in therapeutic fetal interventions.He brings in rich experience from his training at Mediscan systems ,Chennai and further experience from Texas Children Hospital,Houston,USA.He is also a keen researcher having specially trained in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics from HarvardX.
